LUT vs Preset vs Photo Filter: What Is the Difference?
Compare LUTs, presets, and photo filters by what they store, where they work, how editable they are, and which one fits your workflow.

LUT, preset, and filter are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. The confusion is understandable because all three can make the same photograph warmer, less saturated, or more cinematic in a single click.
The useful difference is not how the finished image looks. It is what the file or button actually stores, how much of the edit remains adjustable, and whether the look can travel to another app.
The short version: a photo filter is the experience you use, a preset is a saved set of instructions for a particular editor, and a LUT is a table that maps input colors to output colors.
A photo filter describes the result, not one technical format
“Filter” is the broadest term. It usually means a named effect presented to the photographer: choose a look, change its strength, and see the result. Underneath that button might be a 3D LUT, a group of tone curves, several color adjustments, grain, a vignette, or all of them together.
That is why two filters with similar names can behave very differently. One may only shift color. Another may also soften highlights, lift shadows, add grain, and darken the corners.
A filter is a good choice when the goal is simple: make one photograph feel a certain way without managing every adjustment separately. It is less useful as an interchange format because “filter” does not tell another application how the effect was built.
A preset saves editable instructions inside an editor
A preset records values for controls that a particular editing application understands. It might save exposure, contrast, white balance, curves, color mixing, sharpening, grain, and lens corrections. Apply it, and those controls usually remain visible and editable.
This is the preset's main advantage: it gives you a repeatable starting point without flattening the edit into one opaque result. If the preset makes a portrait too warm, you can reduce its white balance or orange saturation while leaving the rest alone.
The trade-off is portability. A preset made for one editor expects that editor's controls, processing order, and color engine. A similarly named control in another app may not produce the same pixels. Presets may also depend on a particular camera profile or RAW workflow, so applying one to a rendered JPEG can look quite different.
A 3D LUT maps one RGB color to another
LUT means “lookup table.” A 3D LUT samples a color cube: for an incoming red, green, and blue value, it returns a new red, green, and blue value. Software fills the gaps between samples by interpolation.
That narrow job makes LUTs portable. A standard .cube file can often move between photo editors, video tools, and other color-aware software. When the input color space is what the LUT expects, its color transformation can be very consistent.
But a LUT does not know that a pixel belongs to skin, sky, or a white shirt. It does not look at the photograph and decide that it is underexposed. A normal 3D LUT also does not carry a crop, local mask, healing edit, grain pattern, sharpening amount, or adaptive white balance decision.
This matters with camera Log LUTs. A LUT built to convert a specific flat Log signal expects that exact input. Apply it directly to an ordinary sRGB JPEG and the result may be too contrasty, clipped, or simply wrong. A display-ready creative LUT is usually the safer choice for finished photos.
The same look can arrive in three different ways
Imagine a warm portrait with softer highlights and muted greens.
- As a filter, it may be one named card with a strength slider. The implementation is hidden because the experience is the product.
- As a preset, it may set a tone curve, white balance, green saturation, color grading, and grain as separate editable controls.
- As a LUT, it carries the color mapping, while highlight recovery, grain, and any subject-specific correction must happen elsewhere.
The finished thumbnails could look almost identical. The difference appears when the source photo changes or you need to revise the edit.
Choose by what needs to remain adjustable
Use a photo filter when you want to explore quickly, compare several moods, or finish a one-off image without learning a full editor.
Use a preset when you work repeatedly in the same editing application and expect to fine-tune each part of the recipe. Presets are especially useful when exposure and white balance need to change from photograph to photograph.
Use a LUT when the color transform needs to move between compatible tools, or when you already have a color pipeline and only need a consistent creative mapping. A LUT is also practical when an app supports LUT import but not another editor's preset format.
None of the three is automatically more “professional.” The better choice is the one that preserves the control your next step needs.

A quick test before trusting a new look
Do not judge a filter, preset, or LUT from one perfect sample image. Test it on a frame that contains:
- one neutral object, such as a gray wall or white shirt;
- an important highlight with visible texture;
- a deep shadow that should not collapse to black;
- skin, if portraits are part of your work;
- one strong color that could clip or become unnatural.
First inspect the effect at full strength so its bias is easy to see. Then reduce the amount until the neutral object, highlight, and skin still make sense. A look that only works at 100% on its supplied demo image is rarely a flexible starting point.
What FilmFX imports—and what it does not
FilmFX accepts 3D .cube LUTs from 2 to 65 points, up to 30 MB each. You can keep eight custom LUTs in the current browser. They are stored locally in IndexedDB and are not uploaded to FilmFX.
Display-ready LUTs intended for normal sRGB images are the most predictable. FilmFX does not import 1D LUTs or combined shaper LUTs, and an imported camera Log LUT is not automatically given the camera transform it expects.
If you already have a compatible file, you can apply the LUT to a photo online. If you do not, start with the built-in film simulations and compare them at a lower strength. The names matter only because they help you predict the workflow. A filter is quickest, a preset is most editable inside its home editor, and a LUT is the smallest portable piece of the color transformation—not the whole photograph.
